Bernedoodles
Bernedoodles are goofy, charming dogs who love to play outdoors just as much as they love to cuddle up on the couch. One of the most notable characteristics of this breed is their intelligence. As descendants of Poodles, famous for their sharp minds, this breed exhibits remarkable cognitive abilities. Whether it’s learning new tricks or obedience commands, they are quick studies and enjoy mental stimulation. However, if you bring home a Bernedoodle puppy, we recommend starting training early to work on that stubborn, independent streak inherited from their dog parents.

They’re the perfect family dog and have a special fondness for children. Plus, they inherit a nearly hypoallergenic coat from their poodle parent. The Bernedoodle is a gentle, intelligent, and trainable hybrid dog breed that is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. “Invented” in 2003, Bernedoodles, also known as Bernese Mountain Poos, have exploded in popularity ever since, with some becoming social media stars.

Bernedoodle Characteristics
Size: Bernedoodles come in various sizes, which we’ll explore in detail later in this guide. They can range from small to large, depending on the size of the Poodle parent.
Coat: Bernedoodles typically have a wavy or curly coat that is low-shedding, making them a good choice for allergy sufferers.
Temperament: These dogs are known for their friendly and affectionate nature. They are great with families and are often called “gentle giants.”
Intelligence: Bernedoodles inherit their intelligence from the Poodle side, making them easy to train and quick learners.
Lifespan: On average, Bernedoodles have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, which is quite typical for a dog of their size.
Types of Bernedoodles
When exploring the world of Bernedoodles, you’ll come across different types, including mini Bernedoodles and miniature Bernedoodles. To understand these types better, let’s break them down.

Mini Bernedoodle VS. Miniature Bernedoodle
Mini Bernedoodles and miniature Bernedoodles are often confused due to their similar names, but they have distinct differences:

Mini Bernedoodle: A Mini Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Miniature Poodle. They are smaller than the standard Bernedoodle and are known for their playful and affectionate nature.
Miniature Bernedoodle: On the other hand, a Miniature Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. They are even smaller than Mini Bernedoodles and are often considered “teacup” Bernedoodles due to their tiny size.
Standard Bernedoodle
In addition to Mini and Miniature Bernedoodles, there are also Standard Bernedoodles. These are the original and largest variety of Bernedoodle, typically resulting from crossbreeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Standard Poodle. Standard Bernedoodles are known for their big hearts and friendly personalities. They tend to be more wealthy and are well-suited for families with active lifestyles.

F1, F1b, and F2 Bernedoodles
When researching Bernedoodles, you might come across terms like F1, F1b, and F2. These terms describe the generation of Bernedoodle and indicate the level of Poodle influence in their lineage.

F1 Bernedoodle: An F1 Bernedoodle is a first-generation cross between a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle. These dogs are typically 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle in genetics. They can exhibit a wide range of characteristics inherited from both parent breeds.
F1b Bernedoodle: An F1b Bernedoodle results from crossing an F1 Bernedoodle with a Poodle. This generation is usually even more hypoallergenic due to the increased Poodle influence and tends to have curlier coats. Families with allergies often prefer F1b Bernedoodles.
F2 Bernedoodle: An F2 Bernedoodle is a second-generation Bernedoodle resulting from breeding two F1 Bernedoodles. These dogs have a more consistent appearance and temperament as the genetic mix stabilizes.

Grooming Your Bernedoodle
Bernedoodles have a coat that ranges from wavy to curly, which means they require regular grooming. Here are some grooming tips:

Brushing: Brush your Bernedoodle’s coat at least a few times weekly to prevent matting and reduce shedding.
Bathing: Bathe your Bernedoodle as needed, typically every 6-8 weeks.
Professional Grooming: Consider professional grooming for more complex haircuts and maintenance.
Ear Cleaning: Clean your Bernedoodle’s ears regularly to prevent infections.
Nail Trimming: Keep their nails trimmed to a comfortable length.
Coat Colors and Patterns
Bernedoodles come in various coat colours and patterns, thanks to their Bernese Mountain Dog heritage. The most common coat colours include:

Tri-Colour: The classic Bernese Mountain Dog colour pattern featuring black, white, and rust.
Bi-Colour: Some Bernedoodles may have a bi-colour design with just two main colours (usually black and white).
Phantom: Phantom Bernedoodles have a black coat with rust markings on specific areas like eyebrows, cheeks, and legs.
Sable: Bernedoodles have various colours, often resembling a sable or merle pattern.
It’s essential to note that coat colours and patterns can vary widely, even among puppies from the same litter. If you have a specific colour preference, discuss it with your breeder and understand that it may not be guaranteed.
